Our Story

It started the way most good obsessions do — with one bag.

Not a splurge, not an impulse. A find. The kind you spot across a room, walk toward before you've decided to, and pick up already knowing it's coming home with you. The leather had that soft, lived-in weight that only happens with age and care. The hardware still caught the light. Somebody had loved this thing, taken care of it, and then let it go.

That feeling — equal parts thrill and tenderness — is the whole business, if we're honest.

Dark leather bag on staircase

Velvet Hammer started in Portland, as a family project before it was anything close to a company. Weekends turned into a habit: estate sales at dawn, consignment shops, the kind of hunting that requires patience and a good eye and the willingness to walk away from ninety-nine things to find the one. We got good at spotting the difference between "used" and loved. Between something that just needs to be sold, and something that deserves to be found again.

We're still doing exactly that. Just for you now, too.

Curated bags on boutique shelf

Here's what we believe: luxury doesn't have to be new to be real. A bag that's been carried, cared for, and passed on has a kind of value new-in-box will never have — it's already proven itself. Our job is to make sure only the right pieces make that journey to your hands. Every bag we carry has to earn its place: it has to be in genuine, beautiful condition, it has to have that hard-to-fake special something, or we simply know — the way you know — that it's going to make someone's day when it arrives.

If it doesn't clear that bar, it doesn't make the cut. We'd rather sell you three pieces you'll carry for years than thirty you'll forget in a drawer.

Examining a luxury bag

That's the whole philosophy, really. Soft touch, but we don't miss. Velvet on the outside — because finding beautiful things should feel exactly that good — and something sturdier underneath, because you deserve a seller who actually knows what they're looking at, tells you the truth about condition, and treats every sale like it matters. Because it does.

So welcome. Come dig through what we've found. We think you're going to fall for something the same way we did.
